Values

The Greek philosophers saw values as guides to excellence in thinking and action--standards we strive to achieve. Values are practical habits that enable us as individuals to live, be successful and achieve happiness.

What is a Value

  • Values
    Something is a value when
it is of great worth to you--something you really desire. It is important enough that you spend time trying to obtain it or keep it as a part of your lifestyle. Values are labels for things most important to you.

  • Values reflect who you are
Your values reflect who you are. Knowing what is most important to you and why can be helpful when making worth-while decisions and for developing effective relationships. It is difficult to make decisions about work, recreation, home and relationships without first knowing what is most important to you. If confused and unclear about your values you will have difficulty making the bigger decisions in life because you do not know yourself well enough to decide what would be best, or even better.

  • Different Values
People who have different values tend to disagree more than individuals who have similar values. Conflict in relationships often occurs because two individuals have opposite views of a situation. Viewpoints are based on and built upon values.
